Horsetail Falls - Firefall 2017

Horsetail Falls - Firefall 2017

'Firefall' is an event that happens once a year during the last two weeks of February and can only be seen if the clouds are in the right spot from 5:40PM to about 5:42PM. We sat there in the 30 degree temperatures for 3 and a half hours and right when it was supposed to light up, the clouds rolled in. You could sense the pessimism across all of the photographers that were there but then literally a minute or two before it was supposed to start, we  could see it light up from the bottom and extend its way up to the top.

I've always thought that the colors in other peoples photos were enhanced or faked but that's absolutely not true. You see this orange glow in person as shown in almost every photo that you see of it online. This is a MUST for anyone that has not seen it before and you can count on me going again in the coming years.

Chuck Close - Up Close...

Chuck Close - Up Close...

We decided to spend our Superbowl Sunday at the new SF MOMA checking out the Diane Arbus exhibit. I took this photo of my wife on the 5th floor gallery, in front of one of my favorite artists work. Chuck Close's work is even more impressive when you can see it in person.

El Capitan

El Capitan

We had just missed the sunrise at Tunnel View, Yosemite, CA so I decided to take a different approach at photographing El Capitan.

Milhouse At Sunset

Milhouse At Sunset

My favorite place in the bay area is the old Naval Air base in Alameda. It was abandoned for a number of years with only affordable housing left active but in the past couple of years there has been movement and development happening. I'm hoping the charm and the views don't go away in the near future.

Cottonwood Cove

Cottonwood Cove

The sunrise and the sunset in Cottonwood Cove are some of the most relaxing that I have witnessed. Glassy waters and not a sound in the air made for a fun shoot during my friends bachelor party weekend.

Joshua Tree is one of the most amazing places that I have been. Every night, no matter how much cloud cover or how bright the moon might be, you get to witness millions of very bright stars shining overhead. I was only shooting at a 10 second exposure this night and still mananged to get a pretty detailed milky way in most of the photos that I took.

Castle Crags, Mt. Shasta

Castle Crags, Mt. Shasta

A friend and I decided to take a turn around trip to the Mt. Shasta area this past weekend and it showed us about four different types of extreme weather on the way up. After some intense rain fall on the drive up, it cleared for a few minutes and we stopped to capture the top of Castle Crags peaking through at us. Not too shabby...

Sitting at home on valentines day we decided to catch the sunset and do a little impromptu shoot together. This photo was taken using one small-ish reflector and natural light.

Cliffside Shooters

A friend of mine introduced me to a meetup group that was happening at Sutro Baths, San Francisco one weekend so we decided to pickup and go see what it was all about. About 200 people showed up to take photos and the sunset ended up being perfect. This is one shot from that evening.

Inverness Shipwreck

Inverness Shipwreck

It's treasures like this that make taking photos so satisfying because you never know when you will get to visit or live that moment again. Sadly, this ship was recently burned quite badly due to a photographer trying to take photos of steel wool sparks at night. Cherish our landmarks and our state parks, think before you act.
